PRODUCT DEVELOPMENT JOURNEY

A redesigned health and maintenance experience that helps security teams identify issues, prioritize work, and protect every property.

This is a recreation of the Evolon Technology project. Details and some design processes have been changed or omitted.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Evolon Technology develops security solutions that combine physical camera hardware with software for monitoring and managing security systems.

I led the design of a redesigned camera health and maintenance experience, focused on making complex system information easier to understand, navigate, and act upon.

The project involved creating a more intuitive way for security administrators and property managers to monitor camera health, identify device issues, and manage ongoing maintenance activities.

My involvement extended beyond interface design. I worked directly with the hardware and software, participated in product testing, collaborated with engineering and onboarding, and contributed to front-end development. This hands-on approach helped me understand the product as a complete system and design with the practical needs of its users in mind.

Simplifying Security System Management Through Dashboard Design

Project: Camera Health & Maintenance Dashboard

Role: Primary Product UI/UX Designer

Collaboration: Engineering, Onboarding, and Product Teams

Platform: Web Application

Tools: Figma, Prototyping, TypeScript, UI Documentation

Status: Launched; Live Product

THE CHALLENGE

The existing experience was dated and difficult to navigate. Users needed a more straightforward way to understand the status of their camera systems, identify devices requiring attention, and manage maintenance activities.

The challenge was to simplify a complex monitoring experience without removing the operational details users relied on.

I wanted to create a centralized experience that made important information immediately accessible while allowing users to explore individual cameras, maintenance requirements, and historical activity when needed.

UNDERSTANDING THE PRODUCT & USERS

HARDWARE & SOFTWARE

To understand the experience beyond the interface, I brought the physical camera hardware home and worked directly with both the devices and their accompanying software.

I also participated in hardware and software testing, which allowed me to better understand how the system functioned, identify potential usability challenges, and experience aspects of the product from a user's perspective.

I worked alongside engineering and onboarding teams to gain a deeper understanding of the product's technical capabilities, deployment process, and customer needs.

This combination of hands-on testing and cross-functional collaboration helped inform my design decisions and provided a better understanding of how the hardware and software needed to work together.

DESIGN APPROACH & KEY IMPROVEMENTS

As the primary designer, I focused on creating a more cohesive experience across camera monitoring, system health, and maintenance management.

1. Centralized Camera Health Overview

Designed a centralized dashboard that brought important camera and system health information together. The goal was to give users an immediate understanding of their system's condition and help them identify areas requiring attention.

2. Camera Monitoring & Device Details

Developed camera-specific views to make individual device information easier to access and interpret, including device status, health indicators, and relevant monitoring details.

3. Maintenance Management

Designed maintenance workflows to help users organize, track, and manage service requirements and scheduled maintenance activities.

4. Activity & Maintenance History

Improved the presentation of maintenance activity and service history, giving users greater visibility into completed work, outstanding tasks, and ongoing system management.

DESIGN SYSTEMS & DEVELOPMENT COLLABORATION

Throughout the project, I worked closely with engineering to review designs, discuss implementation requirements, and refine interactions based on technical capabilities.

I also developed visual style guides for engineers to reference during implementation. These established consistent visual standards and helped bridge the gap between design specifications and front-end development.

Beyond design documentation, I had the opportunity to contribute directly to front-end development. This experience expanded my technical skill set, including learning TypeScript and beginning to learn C through collaboration with an engineering contractor.

Working alongside developers gave me a stronger understanding of how design decisions translate into code and reinforced the importance of considering implementation throughout the design process.

OUTCOMES & IMPACT

The redesigned camera health and maintenance experience was successfully launched and remains part of Evolon's live product.

The project delivered a more modern, organized interface and a centralized approach to monitoring camera health and managing maintenance activities.

It also strengthened my experience working across hardware and software, collaborating with engineering, and contributing to the development process beyond traditional UI/UX responsibilities.

Looking back

This project reinforced the importance of understanding a product beyond its interface.

By working directly with the hardware, participating in testing, collaborating with customer-facing teams, and contributing to development, I gained a more complete understanding of the relationship between product design, engineering, and the end-user experience.
